Featured Etsy Designer -- Beth from The Bird & Elephant -- plus a giveaway!

Back in December we met Beth - a multi-tasking momma with a FABulous little shop. The Bird & Elephant specializes in 100% organic cotton bodysuits, organic cotton appliques, and hand-carved & stamped designs. We just adore this eco-chic shop full of super soft baby & toddler wear. Read on to learn more about the designer and to enter  a giveaway -- thanks to Beth!

{1} What made you begin your shop?

It was all really good timing during a really bad time period. The economy was great, my husband's job was great, my newborn son was great, and then came the recession. I had just said goodbye to benefits, retirement plans, and an okay salary, when I quit my full-time job as the Supervisor overseeing equipment and lab space in the Photography Department of a local arts & design college where I had graduated with a BFA. I was a full-time stay at home mom who needed to find a way to add to the household income. But never in my wildest dreams did I think I'd be in this line of work. I was the one gal in my family that preferred the wood shop, big loud tools and working with metals. I loved getting my hands dirty with charcoals and my clothing always had splatters of paint. But none of those things are safe for baby and baby was always with me.

Strapped for money, I was tired of the clothing available for my son, so I began knitting cute, urban style hats and started appliqueing his infant tee's and bodysuits. I used fabric remnants from old art projects, leftover balls of yarn, and recycled his onesies and other clothing to use in my applique designs.  The knitting was pretty easy, but I had absolutely no idea what I was doing with the sewing. I come from a family of great sewers, quilters, seamstresses and doll makers, but I never paid close attention, and never learned the rules. Through trial & error, and a lot of research, I taught myself embroidery and then I began having some success with my appliques. I enjoyed what I was making, because I was transforming my sketches and doodles into wearable art. From there, I became addicted. My fabric stash grew, my threads grew, and my skill was developing to the point that I felt someone may actually purchase one of my creations. And that's where things took off. Since I loved what I was making and had a lot of fun doing it, I decided to give Etsy a try. From there, I've received several requests from brick and mortar shops to carry my products and I have chosen a couple to carry my goods. The making has been the easiest part; learning the ins and outs of online selling and marketing is hardcore.

{2} What are some of your other favorite Etsy shops?

Oh my, that's a tough one!
I love the artwork of corid: http://www.etsy.com/shop/corid
Amazing lampshades by umbu; quite unique & beautiful: http://www.etsy.com/shop/umbu
Rabbitsmoon has clean, crisp photography to show off the cute plushies and change pouches in her shop: http://www.etsy.com/shop/rabbitsmoon
I love the authentic clothing of LittleHouses: http://www.etsy.com/shop/LittleHouses

That's a pretty big sampling of my favorites. I could go on forever.

One of Beth's favorite designs: Hand Embroidered Heart Onesie
Another of the designer faves: red heart + tree limb onesie
{3} What is your favorite item currently in your shop?

It's a toss up between these two:
Organic bodysuit with a red heart + tree limb and the sweet little Valentine's heart on a pink bodysuit. I had a lot of fun with the embroidery on this one.

{4} What is up next for you?

Mommy to 2 is up next for me, with my baby girl Lila arriving mid-March. My son inspired me to create this business, it will definitely be interesting to see what a baby girl will inspire. I plan to eventually add gift sets to my shop that would include hand-carved, hand-stamped stationary to match some of the designs; knitted/crocheted booties & shoes in coordinating colors; and maybe diaper covers. I'd love to expand the wardrobe options to include pants and dresses. Right now, I'm developing an organic line of clothing. I have a background in printmaking, and would love to begin transforming some of my designs to silkscreens and hand-carved wood stamps for printing directly onto fabrics, bodysuits and tees. My hand-embroidered goods can take a few hours to create just one, so finding a way to simplify my work without affecting the work is a future goal. As for down the road, I plan to open a bricks & mortar shop of my own.

pediped® Debuts Spring/Summer 2011 Collection

 pediped's Launch of the Adventure Line is  the Perfect Outdoor Shoe for Active Children

Expanded Grip 'n' Go™ Line, Vibrant Color Palette Across All Collections Highlight Other Spring/Summer 2011 Offerings

The pediped® Spring/Summer 2011 collection debuts with the new Adventure Line, an innovative collection of eco-friendly, machine washable, water-safe shoes. The new collection, an expansion of the popular pediped® Flex® line, offers style, protection and comfort both in and out of the water.

The functional, yet stylish Adventure Line footwear includes a natural rubber sole, toe caps and Velcro straps. The machine washable shoes are lighter weight and more flexible than other waterproof shoes available on the market. Offered in EU sizes 20-31, the collection features twelve bright colors in two adorable styles: the Nile, a Mary Jane style for girls, and the Amazon, an athletic sandal for both boys and girls.

The Spring/Summer 2011 collection is pediped’s largest and most innovative to date featuring  more than 75 new styles across pediped® footwear's three lines, Originals®, Grip ‘n’ Go™ and Flex®. The collection features pediped’s signature comfortable fit and a broadened color palette of bright color combinations on trend for Spring and Summer. To meet consumer demand, pediped® has expanded athletic styles, and brought the popular Adrian style across all three lines in brighter colors for boys and girls.

Originals®
·         The Originals® line of soft-soled infant shoes that mimic barefoot walking continues to grow with more styles and a wider variety of colors. The Daisy shoe has been introduced in three colors including a classic white, white multi and the light pink multi. Colorful sandals for boys and girls are now available with the multi-colored Mimi, available in pink, green and yellow, as well as the Sydney in both browns and blues.
·         The Originals® collection will be priced at $32, and is available for children 0-24 months in age.

Grip ‘n’ Go™
·         Grip ‘n’ Go™ footwear is made with all the benefits of Originals®, but with special G2 Technology for active toddlers that are transitioning to walking with a more confident stride. Following the overwhelming success of last season’s Grip ‘n’ Go™ launch, pediped® has expanded the line to feature more than 30 styles. Rich, colorful sandals, classic Mary Janes and several new machine washable athletic styles have been added.
·         The Grip ‘n’ Go collection will retail for $39 - $45, and is available for children 9 months to 3 years in age.

Flex®
·         pediped Flex® is the ultimate shoe for confident walkers who have developed a solid, natural stride.  The Flex line offers more than 60 styles in vibrant colors, including the Maggie sandal, Riley sneaker and Sydney sandal for boys.
·         Flex® styles range in price from $34-$54 and are available in EU sizes 20-29 with select styles now offered in larger sizes up to EU 31.

The Spring/Summer 2011 collection is now available online at www.pediped.com and in select retail stores.

In addition to the debut of the exciting Spring/Summer 2011 collection, pediped® announces the launch of the pediped® Foundation to support children's causes. Since the company’s inception, pediped® has been committed to bettering the lives of children and to date nearly $700,000 in cash and product donations has been donated to children's charities. The establishment of the pediped® Foundation will help foster even more ways for pediped® to give back to those in need. To learn more about the pediped foundation, visit www.pedipedfoundation.org

Featured Etsy Designer -- Toile Tales

Lori and Amy are the FABulous ladies behind Toile Tales -- one of our favorite little hat shops. You may have seen them featured here and well, you can feel the love - we adore them! Read on to get the details on Toile Tales and to win $30 to their cute little shop! We also love their prices -- there is nothing over $35!

{How did Toile Tales begin?}

Amy and I met when our 12 yo's were in preschool. I {Lori} was already sewing and dabbling in crochet. I gave Amy a sewing lesson and before I knew it, she was putting my skills to shame. Pretty much the same thing happened with crochet! Amy was such a quick learn! We have been joined at the hip ever since.
Our crafting fervor had no end! We produced so many items but only had a few girls (at the time) to put our creations on. That's when we started on eBay and small craft fairs. We had a few S L O W years and finally opened our Toile Tales site and have steadily been growing a customer base. We LOVE well ran craft fairs! It's so fulfilling to meet people and see who is buying the item! We put a little piece of ourselves in each item that when the product leaves, we wonder how they will treat it!

{Do you have a favorite item in your shop?}

Our overall favorite hat is the Darling (especially for adult ladies) but we adore the Flirts on little girls.

{the darling} in a FABulous coral color - perfect for Spring!
{What is your bestseller?}

Our best seller is the Darling hat, but a close second is the flower embellishments.

{What is up next for the shop?}

PATTERNS!   We have written all of our patterns and are working on getting them tested.

cupcakeMAG for Littles picks!
{what our Littles are wearing}
{the flirt} in Ecru because it can go from season to season and it will always be in style
{the darling} in Charcoal with the perfect flower embellishment
{the townie} because it doesn't get much cuter....how precious!
